Is Cracking Your Own Neck Harmful?

Hibiscus Chiro blog - Is Cracking Your Own Neck Harmful 2

Have you ever felt so stiff and tight in your neck that you have tried to DIY and force crack it just to feel relief?

If you did so before, then here’s an advice for you. Don’t do it again by yourself!

There’s a huge difference with the knuckle cracking and cracking your own neck, even if you hear the same popping sound. The first one is pretty harmless when you do it. However, as for cracking your own neck… Let’s see what Dr. Gian has to say about it:

Why cracking your own neck is NOT recommended by Chiropractors

Just think that your neck is connected with your brain stem. Each crack or pressure is going to have an effect in your brain and along your spine. One wrong snap can possibly irritate these structures, that’s why its not a good idea.

Also, continually “cracking” your OWN neck can be drawback (instead of useful) over time. You see…when you “crack” your own neck, you are not actually doing an adjustment. You are just forcing the joint to move for the sole purpose of releasing the built up gasses and relieving the pressure in the joint. Therefore, the segment of the spine that “cracked” didn’t actually move. You just jammed the joints together. The worse part, the underlying problem is still there, and your neck issues are sure to come back.

So what’s the best way to do it?

Leave the “cracking” to the spine and posture experts, which are the chiropractors.

A chiropractic adjustment from certified chiropractors is very specific. Chiropractors go through years of graduate school to learn the ins and outs of the spine and orientation of the spinal joints. They know what direction the joint needs to be moved in order to properly adjust it.

When you get a chiropractic adjustment, the chiropractor is able to move the segment of the spine that is misaligned, correct it, while relieving the pressure in the joint. The results of the chiropractic adjustment are longer lasting, less painful and much safer.
